EXPLORING WISCONSIN DELLS

Yesterday we spent the afternoon exploring the town with a walk along Broadway.  Our mission was to find someone to cut my hair, a nice place for lunch, taste a bit of Wisconsin cheese and some window shopping.

The lady who cut my hair was a little confused when I told her I wanted a razor cut, shaggy, bed-head look, especially when she got to my bangs which I personally butchered.  Oh well, she did a nice job following instructions and all for $15 without an appointment.

Then we located the High Rock Cafe which Trip Adviser gave 5-stars.  The butternut squash soup was the best we've ever had.  I enjoyed my house-specialty crab cakes and Denis loved his huge chicken Waldorf salad.

The Carr Valley Cheese House had lots of fresh samples and the lady behind the counter found me a great tasting gluten and lactose free cheese.

We dressed warmly for church so that we could stroll along the River Walk afterwards.  Needed long johns, hat, gloves and rain coat but we had the place almost to ourselves.  To warm up, we found a bakery that served gourmet coffees, hot soup and such.  I opted for a cup of chili and Denis had a nice vegetable soup.

This is our last night at Christmas Mountain Resort and we've enjoyed our time here.  Although the weather hasn't been very spring-like, mostly cold, cloudy and rainy, that's okay.  We loved going to our almost private sauna every evening, exploring the area and the one day we were able to hike.

DEVIL'S LAKE STATE PARK - BARABOO, WI

Yesterday with the sun shining and a bit warmer temperatures it was a perfect day for exploring the area's hiking trails.  Devil's Lake State Park accepted our National Park Pass and waived the $11 entrance fee.

Devil's Lake is Wisconsin's largest state park and spans about 10,000 acres of lake, bluffs and surrounding lands.  In the 1930's, the park was a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that provided work for youth during the Depression.  We saw evidence of their work on the trail.  With 29-miles of hiking trails we choose one of the more difficult and scenic.

WISCONSIN DELLS, WISCONSIN

After leaving the Winnebago Factory we drove a bit and spent one night at a Walmart.  Arrived at Christmas Mountain Village Campground the next day.  This is a coast-to-coast park and is one of our new favorite places.  It's a 5-star resort with cabins, hotel, RV camping and primitive camping all rolled into one.  With two golf courses, indoor and outdoor pools, gym with all the latest exercise equipment, hot tub and best of all a large, really hot co-ed sauna.  The Clubhouse is a dream-come-true for the kids, with computer and arcade games.  We played air hockey and Denis beat me.

Yesterday, I spent the day cleaning and doing laundry.  Denis spent most of the afternoon putting in our new braking system.  The brake buddy we had was over 10-years old and this new one has a few more bells and whistles.

Today we met up with a couple we met in Alaska, Terry & Sharon.  They were passing by on their way to their summer destination.  Great getting together again.
