Death Valley National Park

Yesterday we were hiking along Dante's View at 5,000 feet above the floor of Death Valley and today we were 280 below sea level at Badwater Basin.  Badwater is the lowest point in North America with vast salt flats.  We strolled along the interpretive trail for Harmony Borax Works.  Remember Twenty Mule Team Borax commercials?

We drove the 9-mile scenic loop of Artist's Drive and saw the multi-hued volcanic and sedimentary hills.  We walked on rock salt that over time has eroded into jagged spires and is aptly called the  Devil's Golf Course.  We showed Amanda, my niece, the route that Denis and Ryan, my nephew, Amanda's brother, road 64 miles on mountain bikes in 2010.

It was a hot day in the Valley with temps in the high 80's but we enjoyed the color changes on the hills from morning to late afternoon.  Death Valley is an unusual place with a beauty of its own.
