It's a once a year opportunity to hike the world's largest mountain carving in progress, stand on the arm of Crazy Horse and gaze at his nine-story-high face. Some 10-15,000 people of all ages show up for the event. Admission is free to volksmarchers with a donation of $3.00 and three cans of food per person for the local food pantry.

The hike took us around and behind the face

You can't really appreciate the size from here
|
Look closely and you can see people standing on Crazy Horse's arm - that's where we're going

Unlike Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse will be three dimensional
It's a 6.2 mile round trip hike on hilly, rough terrain with some steep inclines. The trail rises 500 feet and reaches a height of 6,700 feet above sea level. If you ever find yourself in the Black Hills on the first full weekend of June, this is something you need to experience.
We were lucky, after all that wind, rain and cold temperatures, today the sun came out, the wind turned into a breeze and we had temps in the low 60's. It was a beautiful day for a hike.
After the hike, we stopped in Hill City for a bite to eat. The cream of broccoli cheese soup was excellent and the grilled chicken breast with peppers, onion, mushrooms and melted cheese that we shared was more than satisfying.

I love the ambiance of these historic old towns

That's all folks - thanks for stopping in.
Looks like a wonder hike to make and an awesome monument to see in progress.
