LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

Our neighbors, Bill and Lavella Birney, told us we needed to take the Lake Mead sightseeing cruise in Boulder.  With their advise, we first stopped off at the Nevada Welcome Center for a two-for-one ticket and saved ourselves $26. Thanks for sharing Bill and Lavella.

Arriving at the marina around 11:30 gave us plenty of time to purchase our tickets, browse the gift shop and admire the scenery before boarding the boat. The 90-minutes narrated tour started at the breathtaking Boulder Basin and concluded at Black Canyon.  Stopping at Black Canyon for a bit to take lots of photos of the Hoover Dam.

At few facts about Lake Mead:

  • The Colorado River runs more than 800 miles before flowing out of the Grand Canyon into lakes Mead and Mohave
  • The lakes rise hundreds of feet above the old riverbed which is still the border between Arizona and Nevada
  • When full, it is the largest reservoir in the US in terms of maximum capacity
  • Whe full, it is 112 miles long, 532 feet deep with 759 miles of shoreline
  • Lake Mead has not reached full capacity since 1983 due to a combination of drought and increased water demand
All aboard - we sat topside

It was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon and I would recommend it to anyone in the area.  They have a full bar, food and fun crew.

Thanks for stopping in to say hi.
