TOURING NOVA SCOTIA

Yesterday we got out just before lunch with the promise Denis would treat me to lunch on our travels.  Our plan was to visit the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, the Marconi Museum and the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site.

Our first stop was the Bell Museum which is a commemoration of man's inventive accomplishments.  Much of Bell's works were undertaken in Baddeck, NS.  The site consists of 10 hectars of land, overlooking Baddeck Bay which offered a spectacular view.  By the time Bell arrived in Baddeck, the success of the telephone had freed him from the need to earn money.

Our second stop was to the Marconi Museum which brought us along the back roads.  Guglielmo Marconi named the Wizard of Wireless, sent the first transatlantic wireless message from Table Head in Glace Bay.  He proved it was possible to send messages across the Atlantic using electromagnetic waves.

Before visiting the Fortress we stopped for lunch at the Lobster Kettle, a quaint little restaurant with a view of the Fortress across the water.  Yelp rated it 4 stars with good reviews and we were not disappointed.  With an appetizer of mussels, clam chowder and gluten-free sandwiches of soft shell crabs for me and chicken for Denis we were stuffed when we left.

We've been disappointed with some of the National Historic places in Canada but the Fortress of Louisbourg was fantastic.  Located on Cape Breton's rocky shoreline east of Sydney, Nova Scotia, it brings you back into one of North America's busiest 18th-century seaports.  Founded by the French in 1713, it fell under siege twice to the British before being demolished in the 1760s. Reconstruction began in the 1960s, rebuilding one quarter of the original French town and fortifications.  It is one of the largest and best of its kind in North America and we couldn't agree more.

Thanks for stopping in to say hi.

  2. Glad you enjoyed Alexander Graham museum....I'm kind of partial to him as I spent 35yrs with the phone company. Now I don't know what your plans are but if you get up to Halifax and Peggy's Cove give the town of Lunenburg a visit. You can also depart by way of the Digby ferry to St John's NB.........Happy Trails
