Yuma Mega Geocache Event

Winterhaven, CA - Beautiful sunny skies H64, L43 - Thankfully, the gusty winds have subsided

Don't tell anyone but we didn't find any geocaches today
The Original Can of Beans
We have never attended a Geocache event and had to check out the first mega event held in Yuma.  It  was held at Yuma's Gateway Park in Old Town and about 1,200 people showed up.  They had booths set up with raffles, travel bugs, t-shirts and free hamburgs/hotdogs if you wanted to wait in a line about a mile long.  They had on display the O.C.B. (Original Can of Beans)  Geocaching’s First Trade Item, placed in the "Original Stash" by Dave Ulmer (the Inventor of Geocaching and the hider of the first cache) back in May of 2000.

We visited the prison and the cemetery
It was a fun afternoon and it brought us to some historical landmarks:  The Yuma Territorial Prison which housed many of Arizona's most dangerous criminals between 1876 and 1909.   The Mission La Purisma Conception Founded by Father Francisco Garces was destroyed in 1781 and the St. Thomas Indian Mission, built by Father Tributes, a Franciscan Priest, was built near the mission site and dedicated in 1923.

On our way back to the park, we decided to check out the little chapel across the street in the town of Felicity.  That turned out to be very interesting and we even shelled out $5 EACH for a tour.  Check out their website for more info:  http://www.felicity.us/home.html   The museum of history in granite was incredible and we met the man responsible for most of the pictorial engravings.

This is the little chapel on top of a large, man-made hill that attracted our attention

  1. Another fun day exploring, will be nice that the winds have died down. We were at Felicity a few years ago and while they were working on the walls engravings. Even had our pictures taken at the "Center of the World".
