ARE WE SLOWING DOWN?

We're still in Gail's driveway in Sterling, Alaska and I asked myself this question today, are we slowing down?  Is it my imagination or does it takes us longer to get ready, longer to make plans, longer to fix dinner, well you get the idea.  I've been noticing that when we set a time to do something that we easily fall behind schedule.  I'm not going to dwell on this observation but it does make me wonder what's going on.

Home of the famous Kenai River and world class fishing
We made it, on time, to 9:00 mass this morning and after mass stopped at a Ken's Alaskan Tackle Shop.  In order to catch the red salmon that are running right now, we learned that we needed 30 pound test line, a couple of leader lines with weight and hook, and our fishing licenses good for tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.  They tell us we can catch six salmon each.  So tomorrow we're going down to the famous Kenai River and try our luck.  Today we checked out where everyone is fishing.

This is the wrong way to snag and drag a salmon - you must snag it in the mouth - this poor fish had two hooks in its stomach which this man removed and then set the fish free

Denis is all excited about the possibility of catching the BIG one tomorrow
After a quick lunch, Gail brought us to her cabin on the river.  She hadn't been there in a year and wondered how it was holding up.  The cabin was her late husband's project and never quite got finished.  What a beautiful location on an island between the Kenai River and slough.  It's for sale if any of you avid fishermen are interested.

Later, Denis and I drove over to the the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and walked the Keen-Eye Nature Trail to Headquarters Lake.  We watched the Arctic Terns and Loons with our binoculars.

If you can't catch em, you can always ride em

Is this what Denis will be doing if he doesn't catch anything tomorrow??

Nice place to visit for a nature walk, wildlife movie and exhibits - they're expanding in 2014

Boardwalk to the lake - the weather has been beautiful
When we got back, I heard Gail's gravity chair on the deck calling my name and fell asleep in the sun to the sounds of absolute peace and quiet.  The next thing I heard was Gail asking if I wanted beer or wine, it was time for happy hour.  What a wonderful end of a wonderful day.

That's all folks!  Thanks for stopping in.

  1. Happy Hour you say?
Nothing wrong with slowing down and just taking your time, we find it much more enjoyable that way.

  2. There is absolutely nothing wrong with slowing down a bit and enjoying everything more. Sure hope you catch some fish today. Jim is out fishing also but not for salmon.
