From City of Rocks to Rockhound State Park

We planned to go to the Gila National Forest and see the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument but changed our minds. I called the people at the monument and was told the access road cannot accommodate any rig longer than 20 feet and the 45 mile drive in from Silver City takes two hours by car because of the narrow road and switchbacks, we started re-thinking our plans. When I called the RV park they said the access road is passable because they just plowed (ugh, snow).  After we made a U-Turn, the RV park called me back and said that we should take an alternate route out of Silver City, Rte. 35, which could accommodate our rig.  Too late, we were already heading to Rockhound State Park and Spring Canyon.  Maybe next time, because it sounds like an extraordinary place.

Our drive was just 50 miles today and we are glad we're here.  Rockhound State Park is nestled within the rugged Florida (pronounced flo-rita) and Little Florida mountains.  The campground is located at the foot of the Little Florida Mountains and it is so beautiful.   For those of you into semi-precious rocks, you can collect up to 5 pounds of rocks and bring them home with you.  We opted for the hiking trails today.  I would love to spot a Persian Ibex, there are about 800 of them here.  The Ibex, type of goat, was imported from Iran in 1976.  The lady at the information center is very upset about the hunt for Ibex that is taking place over the next couple of weeks because of over population.  Residents of NM must pay $111 and non-residents $1600 for a permit to hunt these beautiful animals. Each hunter is only allowed one kill.  But she worries that it won't be enforced and too many hunters are being allowed out at one time and that's a safety issue.
