AMERICA’S LARGEST NATIONAL PARK

You’d think 250 miles of driving would be a piece of cake for us but with the rolling, frost-heaving roads and the places to see along the way, we have yet to reach Valdez.

We left our picture postcard turnout this morning and stopped at Posty's, a little convenience store/gas station and picked up a loaf of bread and some tomatoes so I could make a fried egg, tomato, onion with mayo on toast for lunch.  They let us tap into their internet and we were able to catch up on some computer work.

Our next unexpected stop was Wrangell-St. Elias National Park visitor‘s center.  Come to find out, we’ve been driving through the park for miles on the Richardson Highway.  It’s a 13.2 million-acre park and preserve and the largest protected road less wilderness in the world, encompassing towering mountains, glaciers and volcanoes.  The park and preserve is larger than Switzerland.  We watched their 20-minute film in a state-of-the-art theater and had an airplane view of the area…..overwhelming and magnificent.  The park and preserve contains the continent’s largest assemblage of glaciers and the greatest collection of peaks above 16,000 feet.  Mt. St. Elias, at 18,008 feet, is the second highest peak in the United States.  Do you know what mountain is the highest?  We’ll be visiting it soon.  I met a young man at the park that has been to over 500 of the national parks/monuments.   Now I’ve got to count up how many we’ve been to and join the website he recommended for us “national park people“.

When we finally couldn’t stand the frost heaving roads any longer, we started looking for a turnout and discovered Worthington Glacier State Recreation Site.  Worthington Glacier is a National Natural Landmark and we are staying overnight in the parking lot looking up at this amazing glacier.   All around us are majestic green mountains with snow capped peaks … this has got to be one of God’s creations.

That’s all folks!  Thanks for stopping in.
